INGMAR BERGMAN (in short)_________________________ Ernst Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1918. In 1937 entered Stockholm University to study art and literature, but become more interested in theater and movies. He did not graduate but wrote a number of plays and 1942 he was given the chanse to direct on of his own scripts. The play was seen by members of Svensk Filmindustri who then offered Bergman a position working on scripts. His breakthrough as a writer was the 1944 movie Torment/Frenzy (Hets), he also worked as assistant director. The movie became an international success and led to Bergman's first opportunity to direct a year later. Bergman was an active director, writer and producer. He worked with film, stage and opera. Bergman directed 62 movies, most of whom he wrote. He directed over 170 plays. Recognizable themes in his works are bleak, dealing with illness, betrayal, and insanity. Ingmar Bergman died in 2007.
