Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna of Russia Her Imperial Highness Tatiana was born 10 June, 1897, at the palace of Peterhof. In the family she was called "Tanya," "Tatya," "Tatianochka," or "Tanushka." Tatiana was close to her mother and preffered her mothers company above all other. Together mother and daugther shared the same deep religious feelings. Tatiana was always very attentive towards her - and in return Tatiana was her mothers favourite. Tatiana never did anything to offend her parents. When her parents asked her to do something she never complained. When the siblings wanted something they always sent Tatiana to ask, since she had such a good relation with the parents. She became sick in 1913 after drinking water while a stay at the Winterpalace in St. Petersburg. And the doctors made her cut her hair. When she after her recovery appeared in public she always wore a wig. took charge of them all and she liked to take care of things, and had the least problem related to her mother when things get tense. Tatiana, like her mother and sister Olga, became a nurse during World War One. And Tatiana had a talent for nursing. She was skilled, devoted amd became quickly popular among her co-workers and patients. She assisted the famous Surgeon Botkin - and he later praised her as the best assistant he have ever had. Tatianas work was hard and they saw with their own eyes the true horrors of war. Olga was not prepared for the horrors she was about to meet in the hospitals. And it turned out that nursing was not her call at all. She could not handle it and after a nervous breakdown - Olga quit nursning. Tatiana never lost her nerve and was often assisting at operations. The nursing changed Tatiana and she became more withdrawn from social activities. But she continued her nursing. Tatiana also formed a committee for the refugees seeking a haven in Russia. She became very popular among both staff and patients. And many of the wounded officers fell in love with her. And she fell in love with Dmitri Yakovlech Malama who was an officer in the Imperial Russian Cavalry. They met when he wounded in 1914, but the after he was appointed an equerry to the court of the Tsar at Tsarskoye Selo a romance began to grow. Even her mother have vague hopes that they would one day marry. In captivity Tatiana had grown razor thin in captivity and seemed "haughtier" In April 1918 the Bolsheviks moved Nicholas, Alexandra and Maria to Yekaterinburg. The remaining children remained behind in Tobolsk because Alexei, who had suffered another attack of haemophilia, could not be moved. It was Tatiana who persuaded her mother to "stop tormenting herself" and make a decision to go with her father and leave Alexei behind. Alexandra decided that level-headed Tatiana must be left behind to manage the household and look after Alexei Appearance Like her sister Olga, Tatiana shared her mothers physique with a tall and slim figure. She was gracefull and totally imperial in her public manners. Tatiana was well aware of her beauty and always made sure to appear elegant. Personality Tatiana was of gentle nature, but rather introverted. She rarely laughed but was never angry. She was eager to enter society and have friends of her own. She loved her sisters, but wished to meet other people. Perhaps why she loved writing letters and never forgot an acquaintance. people found it difficult to forget who she was and this often left her romantic dreams of close, devoted friendships unfulfilled. Interests She loved fashion and developed an elegant taste in dress. She read tons of fashion magazines to be up to date with the latest. She used to assist her mother dressing, since Tatiana´s taste and knowledge was superior in that area. She was an excellent pianist, even better than her sister Olga, but found little pleasure in playing. Like all her sisters she was handy and her needlework was always excellent. She had a little dog named Ortino, her sweetheart. Back |
