The Novel Wives and Daughters was published in a magazine as a serial from 1864-66. Elizabeth Gaskell died in 1865 so the novel was finished by Frederick Greenwood. The story is set in the english countryside in a small town where everyone knows everyone. In this pastoral scenery we meet young Molly Gibson who lives in total harmony with her father, the towns doctor. Dr Gibson have been a widower for many years and decided to remarry. Molly's world is turned upside down when she hears the news and she is not keen on sharing her home with her new stepmother. Soon also her new stepsister, Cynthia, arrives. The two girls become great friends but their relationship is tested when the two become rivals in love... Back |
